Altered Household Items Tutorial by Our Guest DT Richa

A very warm good morning to you all.

Hope you all had a lovely Holi.

Today in our Teaching and Learning Program we have our Guest DT Richa with some altered items which she made using household items with Mixed Media techniques.

Over to you Richa,

Hello everyone,

This is my first post as GDT member of Rainbow Craftykari and I am really excited to be a part of this Teaching and Learning Program. I would like to thank Maninder Kaur for giving me this awesome opportunity.

Who doesn't love antique showpieces? But purchasing these can make a huge hole in your pocket. Today as a part of GDT I am going to show you how to alter old household items into antique beauties using mixed media techniques. The thing that I love about Mixed Media is that you can never go wrong with it and even if you make a mistake by chance, you can always cover it up with gesso and can start again.

Project 1: Altered Bottl
e

To make this take an old glass bottle, some tissue paper and mod podge.

Wrinkle the tissue paper and unfold it. Start covering the bottle with mod podge using simple brush or sponge brush and stick the wrinkle tissue paper as you go.

More wrinkles will ensure more texture and texture is what mixed media is all about. For more texture I have added layers of tissue paper. Don't worry if the papers tears while applying mod podge. Just add a patch of paper there and it will become unnoticeable.

When covered the whole bottle with paper, give it a coat of mod podge.

For more texture add some cheesecloth and leave it to dry.

Add some corrugated sheets with glue. Give the whole thing a cover of black gesso or black acrylic paint and let it dry.

To add more texture you can use cotton laces. To make the front panel add a circular corrugated sheet and apply texture paste mixed with beads on the edges. To give it a more antique look add flat based pearls/thermocol balls randomly with glue.

Cover everything with black gesso/acrylic paint.

It still looked incomplete. So I decided to add a central shiny embellishment. To make this one, I took an old bottle cap and covered it with black gesso and metallic paints. Then added some silver sparkle in the central part using glue and allowed it to dry. On the sparkle added green glass stone to bring out some contrast.
Tip: Sparkles are always messy. Before playing with sparkles always cover your hands with talc powder. The sparkle won't stick to your fingers. Less mess created.

Now it's time to have some fun with metallic paints. On this project I have used golden and brick red metallic paints. To apply the paint, use dry brushing technique. In this technique, the paint brush is kept relatively dry but still holds some paint. The key is to dip the very tip of the brush into the paint and wipe or dab a little bit paint off on rag. Make sure the bristles still appear separate instead of clumped together before brushing. And then paint the surface with light handed (not much pressure) fast strokes.
Tip: If you are not comfortable with dry brushing you can always use your fingers. Pick up little pigment in between your fingers and cover the raised areas.
Add the stone embellishment to your central corrugated sheet and apply two coats of varnish to the whole bottle. Your Antique altered bottle is ready.

Project 2: Altered Pen Stand

I just couldn’t stop after altering the bottle and went on altering an old pen stand.

To alter the pen stand, follow the same steps. Cover it with mod podge, layers of tissue paper and black gesso/acrylic paint. Leave it to dry.

To embellish punch out some flowers and emboss the petals with embossing tool.
Tip: Before embossing the petals, spray some water over them and emboss carefully so that you don't tear the paper. Misting helps in retaining the embossed shape.

Glue the flowers, cotton lace, buttons and slider of zip to the pen stand. Here I have added the button in the shape of a butterfly and have also added plastic embellishment spelling 'Dear Friend'. Cover the embellishments with black gesso/acrylic paint.

Dry Brush everything with metallic paints and apply two coats of varnish. Here is the final outcome.

How to make a 2 layers Explosion Box

This is a tutorial which shows how to make a 2 layer explosion box. Explosion box can be custom made to suit different occasions.

Glimpse of the Explosion box:

Since Friendship day is around the corner, I made this Explosion box for the same occasion.

Steps to make  a 2 layers Explosion Box ;

Step 1
Start with a square sheet of cardstock of any desire color which measures 12 by 12 inch. I close black because it makes any color look bright onto it.

Step 2
Score 4 inches and 8 inches horizontally and vertically.

Step 3
Cut out the squares at corners as shown.

This is how it  looks like.

Step 4
Repeat Steps 1, 2 & 3 and make one more such piece for the second layer with 11.5 inches square cardstock. The layers can be of same size as well but I want it to be a little smaller than the first layer.

Step 5
Apply adhesive (I have used fevicol, you can use any adhesive you have) on the center square of the first layer and glue it to the next piece on top.

The base is ready.

Step 6
To make the lid take a black cardstock of 6 1/4 by 6 1/4 inches size, score 1 inch from all the edges and crease them.

Step 7
Make cuts along the creases on all the 4 edges of 1 inch.

Step 8
Apply adhesive on the flap and fold inwards.

Repeat same for all the four corners to complete the lid.

Step 9
Choose pattern papers and stick them. You can choose any pattern papers you like. I'm choosing 3 different floral pattern papers from Paper designer paper pack which goes along with the occasion.

This is how it looks like once we stick these papers to the base.

Step 10
Embellishments to be added.

1 - I chose Teddy bear die cuts from a pattern paper set I brought from a local store and wrote friendship message on them using a marker.
Stamped few sentiments to make more embellishments. (Clear stamp from Heidi swap).

2 - Quote die cut are from collection of die cuts brought from a local store again, a heart pearl, ribbon, a button, 3 pink mulberry flowers, bling to decorate the lid.

3 - For center of the card:
I stamped a sentiment "love our friendship" on pattern die cut for center of the card, added a ribbon to the tag and a little butterfly which goes along with the pattern paper and few pearls brought from local store.
I added few bling and distressed the corner of all the embellishments with Ranger's Mowed Lawn acid free distress ink pad using blending tool.
I used double sided tape to all the embellishments to give a 3D look.

The complete Explosion Box

This is my take on 2 layers Explosion Box for Friendship Day

Guest DT Shilpi Gupta: Punchcraft Sunflower Tutorial

Hello Crafters, What's up? Today I'm so glad to Welcome a crafter on our blog who is known for her Punchcraft Projects. She makes amazing and innovative Punchcraft flowers. Your mind will be blown away seeing such a beauties. Without taking much time, Let me introduce to you Shilpi Gupta from Shilps Crafts - Unique Handmade Gifts

Over to you Shilpi

Hello,I am Shilpi gupta. I am a software engineer by profession and a crafter by heart. I am married and have a 3 month old daughter. I started crafting 4 years back when I used to make greeting cards for near and dear ones at birthdays and anniversaries. My husband saw those greeting cards and motivated me to take it seriously and to look at it from professional's view. And then I started taking it more seriously, looking for YouTube videos tutorials, following blogs to become aware that such crafting world exists too in this world :)
I started with handmade cards then gradually progressed to flower making and scrapbooks. That day forward i never looked back.

I am so excited to be a guest designer at Rainbow Craftykari. This blog is full of inspirations, tutorials, pictorials, demos and what not. You name it and this blog has it. You will find all the basic and advanced information about the new craft products.
Though I use different kind of techniques in my crafting such as mixed media, scrapbooking, card making, flower making but I love to make different kinds of flowers more. So today I will be sharing with you all a detailed pictorial on how to make real looking sunflowers in simple steps. Girls grab your cup of coffee and sit back as this post is picture heavy.

Let’s begin:
For this we will use Heartfelt creations Classic Sunflower die.

1st step:
We will use 3 large, 3 medium and 1 small die cut outs as shown in picture to make one large size sunflower.

2nd step:
While distressing the die cut remember never apply or dab the blender directly on paper. Dab it lightly on the craft sheet near to the die cut and then in circular motion start moving the blender towards the die cut. Keep distressing the die cut in circular motion. This will ensure even spreading of ink without blotches or spots of ink.

I have used Mustard Seed and Wild Honey Distress Inks here, we will color the cutouts/petals. Color the whole petal using mustard seed distress ink and apply wild honey distress ink just on the pointed petals of each cutout.

3rd step:
Now we will start embossing and molding the petals to make them look real. Take the smallest pointed embossing tool and make 5-6 parallel lines from outward to inward direction as shown in the picture. This will help in curling the petals on their own. I have used Leather perforating pad underneath for embossing.

We will repeat this step with all the cutouts so that all our petals are ready. And it will look something like this. As you can clearly see in the picture, petals are slightly curled towards the center and the embossing has given depth to the petals.

4th step:
We are almost done and now we just need to arrange the cutouts to make a complete sunflower. We will glue down all the cutouts in offset position one upon another. Two petals should not be overlapping each other while arranging the cutouts. For gluing we will use Aleene’s Tacky glue. Its best glue to be used in punch craft and flower making.

After arrangement of all the cutouts, this should look like the below given picture.

5th step:
And the last step is to complete the center of the flower. I have used mustard seeds for the center as it gives that perfect natural look to the sunflower. You can also use brown glitter balls.

Note: Use transparent adhesive to stick the glitter balls to the center. I have used Inkessentials glossy accent. It is strongest and transparent in nature.

And here is your completed sunflower. Isn’t it beautiful? Blooming as if just now plucked from the garden.

It is rightly said flower is not complete without a leaf. Here we will also see how to make leaves for this flower.

6th step:
We will take punch cutouts using lily punch. You can use 100- 120 gsm colored cardstock available easily in Rainbow Craftykari Store. I have used 100 gsm dark green colored cardstock. You can also use 150gsm white iris sheet and then distress it using desired color.

7th step:
We will emboss these leaves in the same way as we have embossed flower cutouts creating vertical lines.

Are these sunflowers and leaves super easy to make? So our flower and leaves are all ready to be assembled on a card. And here we have our finished card.

I have used RTV Clear silicon glue to adhere flowers and leaves to the card base. This glue is my first choice because it gives me ample time to arrange my leaves and flowers. It takes around 30 mins to set permanent. Unlike hot glue gun which dries as soon as it comes out of the gun which makes it impossible to rearrange the flowers and leaves in case one does not find it pleasing to the eyes.

Hope you all liked the tutorial as much I do. You can leave your queries in the comments section and we shall get back to you.
