I feel honored to be a part of this wonderful RC team and thankful to them for making me a part, special thanks to Maninder!!

 

So today I have an inspiration post to share with you guys, the patina effect is so much in trend and I completely love its outcome. So here is what I've created

Prima has a wide range of products, perfect for the mix media in which the black gesso I'm highly recommending it as its perfect for all your steampunk and vintage effect projects you plan and IOD moulds from prima are my favorite, have used both in my project.

Steps:

1. I've used a canvas for the base.
2. I've used clay embellishments and created background using die cuts and wooden frame pieces.
3. Then I have applied the black gesso and let it dry
4. Later, i gave effects using Inka Gold and Patina Effect Paste.

DIY Shadow Box Tutorial by Guest DT Anila

Gifts, who doesn't love gift, but selecting gifts is very tough. But now no more tough because today in our Teaching and Learning Program our Guest DT Anila has brought an awesome tutorial of handmade shadow box. After seeing this tutorial I  bet you will all try. Hello Crafters,

 

This is my first GDT with Rainbow Craftykari. I thank Maninder and RC team for giving me this opportunity. It is indeed a great pleasure to be a part of this talented team.

 

We all know finding gifts for any occasion is a big task, especially if the gifts are for kids and with our own kids around we struggle for their birthday return gifts. Today in this Teaching and Learning program I am going to show some simple ways of making Shadow boxes which make as excellent piece for home décor or for return gifts. These can be modified and decorated in various themes and sizes. 

 

Let’s Begin!!

 

Take a cardstock of size – 12” x 8”. 

 

(Note – 12”x8” size of cardstock makes a shadow box of size 8”x4”, you can modify the size as per your requirement keeping in mind the 2” scored lines that fold in from all four sides)

 

On the 12” side of the cardstock score the paper at ½”, 1”, 1 ½” & 2”.

Next score the paper at 10”, 10 ½”, 11”, 11 ½”.

 

Turn around the paper. Now on the 8” side of the paper score the paper again at ½”, 1”, 1 ½” & 2”. Next score the paper at 6”, 6 ½”, 7” & 7 ½. Your paper will look like this.

 

Now cut along the lines and cut-off the overlapped portion as shown / marked in the picture below. Cut all the squares except the two unmarked squares.

 

 

Separate the two squares. (Check picture below)

 

 

Repeat this step for all the 4 sides. The cardstock will look like this now.

 

Fold the paper (longer side) on all the score lines as shown.  Fold in and stick the first strip on the base, to form the box wall.  Do it on both the sides.

 

 

Fold in and stick the squares over each other as shown in the picture. Trim the smaller sides as shown in the image. The first two score lines are trimmed in line with the wall and the third strip is cut in slant so that when it folds in, it over laps the longer side wall.

 

 

Now fold in the scored lines of the smaller sides and stick it on the base to form the smaller wall. While doing so apply little glue on the squares (shown in the picture), this will give it additional support.

 

 

Once all the sides are folded in the base of the shadow box is complete.

 

 

Now take two pieces of the same cardstock, around 1 ½” x 1 ½”,  punch a hole on them and stick them from the backside of the box.  Apply generous amount of adhesive here as this part is going to bear the entire load of your shadow box. Tie a matching satin ribbon through the holes to use it for hanging.

 

 

Now comes the decoration part. Stick a patterned paper on the inside of the box and decorate it as per the theme.

 

 

Here I have made a few shadow boxes with different themes. 

 

Shadow box 1

This is in a “Baby girl” theme. It is decorated using some Baby stickers like baby clothes, booties, socks, an elephant. The name of this baby is mounted on white coloured die-cut circles. Washi tapes are on the borders. 

 

 

Shadow box 2

The next one is for a home décor. Here I have used flower, leaves and chipboard decorations.

It can also be made to display inspirational quotations / sayings. This is a smaller sized shadow box.

Here it is made as an intial art with floral arrangement.  This is a little different shadow box it is covered with a plastic sheet.  (When you make a closed box you can even have 3D/ standalone decorations)

 

 

Shadow box 5

A Jungle safari Shadow box. For this shadow box I have used a double sided patterned paper with animal print. Embellished it with die-cut flowers, animals and birds stickers, butterflies, some smiley buttons.

 

 

Shadow box 6

This is an Aquarium Shadow box. It has been decorated with some fine stones, shells, fish stickers etc. There are endless possibilities.

Altered Household Items Tutorial by Our Guest DT Richa

This is my first post as GDT member of Rainbow Craftykari and I am really excited to be a part of this Teaching and Learning Program. I would like to thank Maninder Kaur for giving me this awesome opportunity.

Who doesn't love antique showpieces? But purchasing these can make a huge hole in your pocket. Today as a part of GDT I am going to show you how to alter old household items into antique beauties using mixed media techniques. The thing that I love about Mixed Media is that you can never go wrong with it and even if you make a mistake by chance, you can always cover it up with gesso and can start again.

Project 1: Altered Bottle

To make this take an old glass bottle, some tissue paper and mod podge.

Wrinkle the tissue paper and unfold it. Start covering the bottle with mod podge using simple brush or sponge brush and stick the wrinkle tissue paper as you go.

More wrinkles will ensure more texture and texture is what mixed media is all about. For more texture I have added layers of tissue paper. Don't worry if the papers tears while applying mod podge. Just add a patch of paper there and it will become unnoticeable. 

When covered the whole bottle with paper, give it a coat of mod podge.

For more texture add some cheesecloth and leave it to dry.

Add some corrugated sheets with glue. Give the whole thing a cover of black gesso or black acrylic paint and let it dry.

To add more texture you can use cotton laces. To make the front panel add a circular corrugated sheet and apply texture paste mixed with beads on the edges. To give it a more antique look add flat based pearls/thermocol balls randomly with glue.

Cover everything with black gesso/acrylic paint.

It still looked incomplete. So I decided to add a central shiny embellishment. To make this one, I took an old bottle cap and covered it with black gesso and metallic paints. Then added some silver sparkle in the central part using glue and allowed it to dry. On the sparkle added green glass stone to bring out some contrast.
Tip: Sparkles are always messy. Before playing with sparkles always cover your hands with talc powder. The sparkle won't stick to your fingers. Less mess created.

Now it's time to have some fun with metallic paints. On this project I have used golden and brick red metallic paints. To apply the paint, use dry brushing technique. In this technique, the paint brush is kept relatively dry but still holds some paint. The key is to dip the very tip of the brush into the paint and wipe or dab a little bit paint off on rag. Make sure the bristles still appear separate instead of clumped together before brushing. And then paint the surface with light handed (not much pressure) fast strokes.
Tip: If you are not comfortable with dry brushing you can always use your fingers. Pick up little pigment in between your fingers and cover the raised areas.
Add the stone embellishment to your central corrugated sheet and apply two coats of varnish to the whole bottle. Your Antique altered bottle is ready.

Project 2: Altered Pen Stand

I just couldn’t stop after altering the bottle and went on altering an old pen stand.

To alter the pen stand, follow the same steps. Cover it with mod podge, layers of tissue paper and black gesso/acrylic paint. Leave it to dry.

To embellish punch out some flowers and emboss the petals with embossing tool. 
Tip: Before embossing the petals, spray some water over them and emboss carefully so that you don't tear the paper. Misting helps in retaining the embossed shape.

Glue the flowers, cotton lace, buttons and slider of zip to the pen stand. Here I have added the button in the shape of a butterfly and have also added plastic embellishment spelling 'Dear Friend'. Cover the embellishments with black gesso/acrylic paint.

Dry Brush everything with metallic paints and apply two coats of varnish. Here is the final outcome.

Embossing tool,

Mini mister,

Black gesso/acrylic paint,

Metallic paints,

Brushes,

Glue gun/white glue.
