Quilled Wall Clock by DT Ishani

Hello dear crafters,

As the year comes to an end, I think it’s time to pause and think of all the good things that happened and the lessons we learnt from our mistakes. An ode to the time, which stops for none is the project I have for you.

I have a quilled clock to adore the lovely walls of your little girl’s room. You can have variations as per your requirement. You could also make it to suit your décor or may have a masculine themed clock. I just adore florals and wanted to show you some simple quilled flowers to adorn anything you’d want to.

Material required:

Cardboard/chipboard (for frame of the clock)

Clock assembly

Pattern paper

Double sided tape

Quilling strips (3mm or 5mm)

Slotted quilling tool

Glue

Scissors

Small half pearls

1. I took an empty chocolate box as a base of my clock. You can take a cardboard/ chipboard or any other cardboard box of your choice for the base of the clock.

2. I found the centre point of the base and poked a hole so that the clock assembly can come piercing through that hole. Then I assembled the clock parts to see if they
fit well.

3. Then I took a pattern paper to cover the cardboard piece and tucked it into the sides neatly. I used double-sided tape on the surface of the box to neatly stick the
pattern paper.

4. Now is the time to quill your favourite things. I have used 3mm strips here, but if you are a beginner you can start with 5mm strips (as you have more surface to hold on to). I used basic teardrop shape to make the majority of my flowers and leaves. To quill a teardrop shape, make a tight coil of the strip take it off the quilling tool, loosen the coils just a little bit and pinch from one side. Most of the shapes are done this way, just the pinching differs. I used a half pearl for the centre of few of the flowers.

These are the shapes I made with the teardrop shape.

5. I used another favourite technique of mine to make a flower by using the crimping tool. Crimp the strip you want to be the outside of the flower. Attach it to the small strip that will make the pollen area of the flower. Then, coil it to have a plain pollen part and a crimped petal part.

6. I made tight coils of two colours stuck together and made tendrils to add interest to the flowers and leaves.

7. Before you stick them on, mark the hours utilising a protractor, from 0° to 360°at 30° difference. Arrange your flowers depicting each hour and stick them on the base
using glue. You could also glaze each of the flowers or use a sealant to protect your work before you stick them.

8. Now that the flowers are arranged and glued to the clock, put a battery in your clock assembly and your clock is ready and ticking!

I hope you are inspired by this tutorial and would try something similar. Most of the materials mentioned above are available at Rainbow Craftykari Store and you can also pre-order by sending an e-mail to rainbowcraftykari@gmail.com

Guest DT Afrreen: Folding Album Tutorial

Hello Crafty Friends,

A very good morning to you all.

Today in our Teaching and Learning Program we have Afrreen Banu as Guest DT. She is passionate about making handmade crafty products like Kundan Jewellery, Quilling and Papercrafts. She will gonna teach us Folding Album, so sit back and enjoy the step by step tutorial from her.

Over to you Afrreen,

Hello Everyone,
This is my first GD post for Rainbow Craftykari and thank you Maninder for this opportunity. Today am going to share a pictorial tutorial of making Mini Album.

Lets begin,

Step1: For album base we need chipboard (gsm as per your wish). Need 5 piece of various size chipboard size as follows (11x6.5cm ,11x3.5cm, 11x8cm, 11x3cm, 11x5cm), then 2  different pattern sheets for covering the chipboard outer and inner part (size of pattern sheet 26 ¾ x 11¼ cm and 30 x 14cm).

For inner pages need 4 piece of black cardstock 16.5x8cm score them at (8|0.5|8) here I used Penguins in love pattern sheet from Papericious.

Step 2: Adhere the chipboards to the pattern sheets for outer cover, trim the corners now you can see the excess of pattern sheets outside the chipboards, just fold them and stick it inside the chipboard I used red tacky tape for sticking them , you can also use white glue, now stick the inner part with another sheet of pattern paper and trim it off the excess ones outside the chipboard, and I have put magnetic clips on both the sides.

Step 3: For hanging charms, I used eyelet on top of the 11x3.5 size and chained them using jump rings, hanged charms in the chain using jump rings.

Step 4: Adhere pattern sheets as per your wish for inside pages now stick inner pages one after other, note a point while sticking adhere them opposite direction( if one page folded side is at the left then stick 2nd page, & folded side should be on right)

Step 5: for inner page decorating I just created a pocket and tags and I have fussy cut penguin from the pattern sheet and adhered them to the inner page, I used just for you embossed sentiment, so as I created pockets and put some tags and die cuts for other pages, adhered ribbon in center of the page & added die cuts to it.

Step 6: Used stitched oval die cut and frame, adhered at the center of the page and I used  corner die cuts, flower and leaf to decorate it.

Step7: Now adhere the accordion type folded pages to the center base (11x8).

Step8: I used fussy cut love you from Papericious pack and adhered it, for decoration I arranged flowers, leaves (flowers and leafs are made out of dies) added glitters in leaves and flowers.

Step9: Added few dew drops for leaves and flowers using glossy accents.

For adding glitters just sprinkle glitters over the flowers and leaves, if you are satisfied with the amount of glitters sprinkled just take a pic of it, now shutter all the glitters down, for adhering  glitters for 1 part of glue 1 part of water mix them well, it will become thinner, wet your brush and dip it in the mixture ,now just carefully splatter the mixture using brush (refer the pic taken by you ).

If you feel you want light sparkles then give slight coat, and now sparkle the glitters over it and shake the excess, if u feel anywhere excess amount of glitters adhered don’t worry use napkin and spread the excess.

And your project is ready. If any doubt, feel free to ask and leave your comments here.

Guest DT Pavitra: Magnetic Mixed Media Note Pad

Hello Crafty Friends,

A very Good Morning to you all.

Again we are back with our guest DT in our Teaching Learning Program  and today its Pavitra with her stunning Mixed Media note pad. Everyone think that Mixed Media is hard but Pavitra showed in this  step by step detailed tutorial that how to compose it and get the desired results in Mixed Media.

Over to you Pavitra,

Hello Everyone!

I am Pavitra here, and what a feeling to be on this platform and sharing my work with you guys, thanks you so much Rainbow Craftykari Team for this opportunity .

Today! I am gonna share a mixed media project with you guys.
So let’s get started …..

I had a magnetic sheet which I got with one of the die and was lying as scrap, so I thought of converting the little one into something interesting.

Firstly I sized a canvas sheet to the size of my magnetic sheet and pasted it on top of it with the help of heavy body gel.

Once dried properly I applied a goat of white heavy gesso and again left it to dry, you guys can off course use your heat gun to speed up the process.

After that I stamped the canvas sheet with various stamps using black archival ink, here in you can use any permanent ink and can also experiment with colors to add more interested.

After stamping it’s time to add some texture and for that I used modeling paste with a stencil.

For coloring my background I used distress sprays, working with them is super easy, quick and fun. I simply sprayed the distress sprays  directly on the surface and then sprayed water with a mister to let the color blend.
I left it to dry naturally and start working on my embellishments.

I used die cuts, stamped images and handmade blooms as an embellishment that off course shows how versatile dies and stamps can be, and how we can multi function with them. I die cut cardstock twice and stick the two pieces with clear glue to give it more strength and colored the edges with archival ink and later applied a coat of clear crackle paste.

Once dried properly I sponged walnut stain on the entire piece for the cracks to become visible, here in I would like to give a advance always leave your crackle paste or paint to dry naturally, never heat set them with your heating tool as you will not get the desired results.

For coloring my blooms I used archival ink red carnation and shaped them with my embossing tools as shown in the picture.

The yellow blooms are colored with archival ink saffron and also embossed the similar way, once I m done with all the blooms the dust them with diamond dust and clear glitter. I also used various leaf cutouts to compliment my blooms.

Finally I arranged my blooms on the magnetic sheet and also tied a twine to add more interest.

N
ow it’s time for finally assembly, I stamped a cage image and a sentiment with black archival ink and dust them with clear glitter for a shuttle shine.

And here is the finished project ready to be adorned in my room, since its magnetic it can be placed on any metal surface. I thought of writing some positive quotes on the pad and off course blooms are going to add on that only.
Some more close-ups

Hope you enjoy it!!!

Take care, keep crafting.
